UK Company Launches Cleaning Tech Base

A cleaning tech base by leading facilities management firm Mitie was officially opened recently by Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands. The site, which serves as the base for Mitie’s Central Government & Defence business, is also home to its state-of-the-art Cleaning and Hygiene Centre of Excellence (CHCE), showcasing the latest science, technology, and innovation in the cleaning industry.

In line with Mitie’s Plan Zero commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions in its operations by 2025, the hub is a net zero office, powered and heated with renewable electricity, and 22 electric vehicle charge points in the site’s car park. “As one of Britain’s biggest businesses, we are proud to be strengthening our connection to the region with our Midlands Hub. Home not just to hundreds of colleagues, but also our state-of-the-art CHCE, we are leading our industry with the latest in technology, innovation, education, and training, all under one roof in the heart of the West Midlands,” said Phil Bentley, CEO of Mitie.

With more than 3,800 staff in the region including 300 based at the Midlands Hub, Mitie runs services at many nearby locations across the Greater Birmingham area, including Birmingham Airport, Birmingham New Street railway station, Russells Hall Hospital, Amazon, and The Bullring Shopping Centre. The hub brings together and trials the latest cleaning methods – from robotics and UV technology through to enzyme cleaning products, keeping the company’s 15,000 employees up to date on essential cleaning services for a broad range of clients across the UK, including hospitals, schools, manufacturing sites, retailers, and corporate workspaces.

“It’s great to see the level of investment Mitie are putting into skills, technology and innovation. And now – thanks to their rather unique CHCE – they are supporting 3,800 jobs for local people,” said Street.
