The United States has been in the news for a state-of-the-art temporary cricket stadium that it erected in less than four months earlier this year for the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York was constructed between February and May 2024 and has been creating a buzz for the eight matches that it is playing host to, with the most talked about one being the high-tension India vs Pakistan that will take place on June 9.

Here is a look at some wondrous facts and figures behind the temporary stadium that has been the talk of the cricketing world for a while now.

  • The stadium, touted to have cost 30 million dollars, is located in Eisenhower Park, Nassau County, 30 miles east of Manhattan and has the capacity to seat 34,000 people.

  • Although the stadium’s design was revealed by the ICC in January 2024, the construction work on it began only in February.

  • Constructed mostly with steel and aluminium, the Nassau County Stadium is the first modular cricket stadium in the world. Its pitch consists of four primary pitches and six drop-in surfaces that were initially prepared in Adelaide, transported to Florida, and finally installed in New York for the T20 World Cup.

  • With a focus on sustainability, the project has repurposed the grandstands from various golf tournaments and the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix to create the general seating area. Other features include over 80,000 square feet allocated for hospitality, including a party deck, fan suites, cabanas, and VIP clubs, strategically located media and broadcast zones, and a diverse range of premium food and beverage vendors.
  • The venue was inaugurated on May 15 with notable sports figures such as former New York Knicks shooting guard John Starks, Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt and legendary cricketer Curtley Ambrose present for the grand opening.

  • Designed by Populous, a renowned architecture firm specializing in sports and entertainment venues, the stadium boasts a design legacy that includes iconic structures like Yankee Stadium in New York, the sprawling Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad—the world’s largest cricket stadium—and London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, home to English Premier League action.
